On April 15, 2000 the Wekiva Wilderness Trust and Orange Audubon Society held the 3rd annual Welcome Back Songbirds Festival at Wekiwa Springs State Park.

This event introduced novices, particularly kids, to the fun of birding and the wonders of bird migration.

"Welcome Back Songbirds"
Festival

The festival was held at the Youth Camp at Wekiwa Springs State Park from 8AM-2PM. Early risers see the most birds, on our expert-led bird walk.
Mist-netting and bird-banding were demonstrated by participants in one of Florida's premiere bird banding research projects. Kids and adults built wooden bird nest boxes to take home. Kids can also make bird feeders out of recycled materials to take home and fill with bird seed.

Talks by experts in their field included:

  •  "Make Your Yard Friendly for Wildlife"
  • "Ask the Expert" and :Birding by Ear"
  • "Basic Bird Identification"
Other talks were bird migration for beginners and songbird rehabilitation. There were bird games for kids and a bird calling contest. Environmental groups sold wildlife food plants, T-shirts, books, and refreshments.

Cost of the festival is free, your only cost is park admission of $4 per vehicle.
